Waiting for my sister on the busy road outside my little Victorian maisonette, situated above a barbers in London, I watched the early morning traffic as the city started its Saturday and the excitement and promise of the weekend ahead was buzzing in the late August air. It was a beautiful Summer day, bright blue sky with puffy clouds, a cooling breeze and a strong Sun ~ perfect to say goodbye to the home that had raised me, where I had experienced both the most pain and the most growth, where I had finally discovered my purpose and the keys to who I am, over the past five years. As I stood saving a space for the car to pull up under the beautiful plane trees that whooshed gently in the light wind, a leaf fell from above and nestled in my chest where I’d crossed my arms. I smiled. The Earth Spirits were with me. They were telling me, “It is time”. They were reassuring me that I was doing the right thing. I lifted it from my chest, closed my eyes and thanked them, placing the leaf gently in my bag to accompany me and bless my travels on my way. When I stepped into the shower at my mother’s that evening in the sleepy Yorkshire village where she lives, I found a piece of the leaf pressed against my heart, releasing it with gratitude through the window to join Nature’s eternal cycle of death and decay leading to rebirth, a cycle so innate that its knowledge runs through the veins of every tree, every creature as it sheds, rests, regrows and blooms each year.
As I listened, the raindrops pitter-pattered outside, falling from the night sky onto the path that ran beneath the window where no other sound came ~ the first rain that my mother said had fallen in weeks ~ and I knew it was the Water Spirits greeting me and welcoming me to my new life, the next chapter on my journey…
